The Chibi Project FAQ for Conventions

The Chibi Project's legend has spread across anime fandom. Ask ten random anime fans if they've been to this site and at least one of them is bound to have been here...and the others will surely want to check it out once they find out the crazy stuff we do.

However, in the last few years, the legend has extended beyond the Internet. The Chibi Project staff have been on panels at Anime Boston, Anime Expo, Bakuretsu Con, Tsubasacon, Nan Desu Kan, and elsewhere. We've conducted live experiments at Anime Boston, Nan Desu Kan, and Tsubasacon. (We've routinely filled the room to capacity at Anime Boston.)

With the site's popularity, we're getting more inquiries from convention organizers about helping them out at their conventions. To explain what it is we do and answer some of the more common questions, we've created this special FAQ just for convention organizers!

  1. What is The Chibi Project?
  2. What will you do to draw people in to our convention?
  3. What stuff will you do at our convention?
  4. What sort of equipment do you need to run this stuff?
  5. This all sounds great! Will you come to our con?
  6. Do you have bios we can post on our guest page?
  7. Do you have panel and event descriptions for our web site and program guide?
  8. I don't run a con. How can I get one near me to invite you as guests?
  9. How can we contact you?

  1. What is The Chibi Project?
The Chibi Project is a web site started in 1999 that conducts odd, yet humorous experiments on anime toys. The site was created and is maintained by PatrickD (of AnimeCons.com) and a team of others.

  2. What will you do to draw people in to our convention?
The Chibi Project will announce on our home page and our Appearances page that we are attending your convention so that our fans will know we're there (and provide a link to your site). We'll also tell people what panels or events we might be running at your convention.

  3. What stuff will you do at our convention?
Well, obviously if you're interested in having The Chibi Project at your con, you'd probably want us to run a panel. When we had our panel at Anime Boston 2004, we were scheduled against Monica Rial's panel and the opening of the dealers' room...but we still filled the room with between 300 and 400 people!

Also, PatrickD has hosted Anime Unscripted at Anime Boston, Nan Desu Kan, PortConMaine, Bakuretsu Con, and other conventions. It's like Whose Line is it Anyway?, but with an anime twist and regularly draws in a large percentage of the convention's attendees and has a history of filling whatever room it's in (including Anime Boston 2004's main events room, which sat 1000 people!) He would be more than happy to host the event at your convention as well. Anime Unscripted can be played either using the convention's guests (which usually works best because the audience already loves them) or people pulled from the audience (in the event the convention doesn't have many guests).

In addition to The Chibi Project's panel and Anime Unscripted, the minds behind The Chibi Project would be willing to host or join in on other panel programming. PatrickD has also hosted panels on topics such as anime conventions, web sites, .hack, and cosplay. He also has experience hosting convention events such as the masquerade.

  4. What sort of equipment do you need to run this stuff?
Our "The Chibi Project - LIVE!" panel requires:
    • 60 minutes in a panel room
    • a DVD player capable of playing DVD-R
    • a TV or screen hooked up to the DVD player
    • microphones (recommended in a large room, optional otherwise)
    • The Chibi Project will handle everything else

    Anime Unscripted requires:

If you have questions about our tech requirements at your convention, please ask.

  5. This all sounds great! Will you come to our con?
We'd love to! There's just one problem...we're not rich. We simply cannot afford to go to all the conventions that would like to have us. However, don't write us off just yet! We might already be considering going to your convention anyway...and complimentary guest passes could seal the deal. If we weren't planning to attend your con, maybe we would if you ask us.

Unfortunately, the only way to guarantee that we'll be able to attend your convention (assuming the date isn't already booked) would be to offer to cover our travel and hotel costs. (For reference, PatrickD's closest airport is Boston (BOS).) We realize that not every convention can afford to do this, so contact us and maybe we can work something out.

(We also like it when we're listed as guests. Nothing quite like seeing your name up in lights...so to speak...)

  6. Do you have bios we can post on our guest page?
Sure! Here's a bio for your site (contact us and we can send an image):
The Chibi Project is an ongoing research project into the durability of anime toys. Starting with an evil little figure of the Sailor Moon character "Chibi Moon", The Chibi Project's top scientists began to subject the small soldier to a battery of tests. Having failed to determine a method of destruction, they have since moved on to other test subjects such as Burning Gundam, Shinji, and Pikachu in hope of finding a method of defeating evil once and for all.
If you need a bio for just PatrickD instead of The Chibi Project, see AnimeCons.com.

  7. Do you have panel and event descriptions for our web site and program guide?
Description for "The Chibi Project - LIVE!":
Insane scientists have conducted experiments on a Chibi Moon figure and other anime toys like Burning Gundam and Pikachu. Meet the minds behind The Chibi Project, see what they've been up to lately, and watch a podcast episode filmed live.

Please refer to the Anime Unscripted web site for a description and other details about that event.

  8. I don't run a con. How can I get one near me to invite you as guests?
Contact your local convention's organizers and tell them you want The Chibi Project at their convention. Send them our URL in e-mail. Post your request in their forum. Get your friends to help drum up support too. (To find a con near you, check AnimeCons.com.)

  9. How can we contact you?
